Where the Stations Come From

Project Radio's catalogue is built from public, open sources with our own work on top of them. This page records what came from where, and on what terms.

Sources

Radio Browser

community-radio-browser.info — a community-maintained directory of internet radio stations, released into the public domain (CC0). Anyone may use it for any purpose without attribution. We attribute it anyway.

Roughly half of the working stations in our directory originate here.

The Icecast public directory

dir.xiph.org — the listing that Icecast servers opt into publishing. Any server that chooses to appear there is available for inclusion.

Stations listed on the original Project Radio website, together with the descriptions, logos and details gathered for it.

The stations themselves

Where a station's server publishes information about itself — its name, genre, website, and what it is currently playing — we read it, because that is what publishing it is for.

Station submissions

Station owners can submit their own stations through the app. We review each submission before it appears in the directory.

What we add

• Health checking. Every stream is opened and checked for real audio, not just a connection. Stations that fail are marked and eventually hidden.
• Enrichment. We correct names, fill in missing genres, and standardise country and language tags.
• Compilation. The selection and arrangement of the catalogue as a whole is our own work.

What we do not do

• We do not scrape websites that prohibit it.
• We do not use paid or licensed datasets we have not licensed.
• We do not host, store, or record any audio.

Logos and trade marks

Station logos and names belong to the stations. They appear here to identify the station to a listener, which is what they are for. Any station that would rather we did not use its logo need only say so. See ourcopyright and takedown page.

Corrections

If something about your station is wrong, or you would rather not be listed at all, write to takedown@projectradio.net. We will fix or remove it without argument.
